A huge change to vehicle registration rules came into force this week.

New number plates were released by the DVLA from Tuesday, with thousands of drivers set to be impacted.

The change will see newly purchased motors – registered between March, 1 and August 31 this year – have ’22’ printed on their registration plate.

The DVLA makes these alterations two times per year with the next due from September 1, 2022 with all new cars from that date registered with “72”.

From March next year, drivers will see plates bare the number “23” followed by “73” in September 2023 and so on, reports The Mirror.

At the moment, new cars in the UK are registered with the “71” tag on their number plate following the latest registration change in September 2021.

The good news for car buyers is that the incoming updated plates could result in cheaper vehicles

This is because car dealerships often attempt to try and get rid of their stock just as new registration plates come in.

The new plates will be “BS AU 145e” style, which meet the new British Standard for Retroreflective Number Plates.

AutoTrader says the main benefit of the new BS AU 145e standard plates is that they’re more durable.

They said: “The plates are made from tougher material and need to pass ten tests – including the newly added abrasion test, which checks if the number plates can withstand debris like road salt and dirt”

Another major change is a ban to 3D lettering, with only solid black lettering allowed.

This is being done in order to assist Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in verifying registration plates on the roads.

The new number plates will also have to include the supplier’s business name and postcode, along with the name of the number plate manufacturer and the new standard.
