AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine might update its vehicle lien and title system by moving more of it online.

Republican Rep. Mike Perkins of Oakland introduced a bill that’s working its way through the Maine Legislature. Perkins said the bill allows the state to create an electronic process for maintaining and exchanging title and lien information.

State officials have worked to reduce a titles backlog that numbered more than 70,000 a few years ago, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said. An electronic title system would help prevent the backlog from recurring, Bellows said.

The current process largely relies on paper records. Supporters of the proposal said an electronic system would also reduce typos, improve data security and cut down on wait times. They also said a dozen states have already implemented electronic lien and title systems.

A committee vote on the proposal is planned for the coming weeks.
