Over 100 vehicles were escorted back to a check site and two people were arrested during a day of action in Haverhill earlier this week. 

The operation took place on Wednesday 26 January, with the aim of disrupting and the activities of criminals using the local road network and to promote road safety by checking vehicles to ensure they were safe and legal, along with detecting any drivers committing offences.

Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) led a multi-agency operation assisted by colleagues from the Roads and Armed Policing Team, Road Casualty Reduction Team, Commercial Vehicle Unit, Kestrel Team and Sentinel Team, along with partner agencies the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and West Suffolk Council Taxi Licensing.

Vehicles identified as being potentially involved in criminality were brought back to a check site at The Meadows Car Park, off Ehringhausen Way, where police officers conducted checks of the vehicles and occupants. 

Officers were also focused on all-round road safety and the fatal four offences of drink/drug driving, driving whilst using a mobile phone, speeding, and not wearing a seatbelt. 

Two men were arrested, one of whom was subsequently charged for driving without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence; with the second person released under investigation for the offences of possession of class B and class C drugs and driving without insurance. 

In total 111 vehicles were escorted back to the check site – four of which were seized – with 59 Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) issued as follows: eight for illegal tyres; six for not wearing a seatbelt; six for tinted windows; five for an overweight vehicle; four for driving without insurance; three for vehicle registration offences; two for an insecure load; and one each for numerous other offences including speeding; driving otherwise then in accordance with a licence; and illegal lights.

PC Adam Nightingale, of Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This was an extremely productive day of action as demonstrated by the sheer number of vehicles that were inspected and TORs that were issued. 

“We are grateful for the assistance of all our policing colleagues and partner agencies in helping us to make the day such a success. We wanted to send out a strong message that we will not tolerate anyone using our roads to commit crimes or to take unnecessary risks with the safety of others.”
