Aggravated assaults, shooting reported by police | Press Register – Clarksdale Press Register

The Clarksdale Police Department has reported five aggravated assaults over the past week and is asking the community to help them to reduce the gun violence in Clarksdale by contacting authorities with information.

The city has repeatedly told citizens “if you see something, report something,” police will be dispatched to check it out, determine if something is going on, collect evidence and just be a visible presence to let law breakers know they need to move on.

Clarksdale Assistant Chief Norman Starks has asked anyone with information about this incident to call the Clarksdale Police Department at 621-8156, or simply dial 911. Residents can also call the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Department at 624-2411. All calls remain anonymous.

Clarksdale does not have a Crimestopper’s program.

 

Aggravated assaults

Police were called to the 400 block of Mooney Street early this week. Police reports said four people were walking in the 400 block of Mooney and were shot at by a black man that was not further identified. Police said no one was injured in the shooting. The incident is under investigation as an aggravated assault since a weapon was involve and it made the victims fear for their life.

A man was hit in the arm by gunfire as a passenger of a vehicle driving on Highway 49 South. Police reports said the vehicle was shot into at least once with the bullet hitting the passenger in the arm. Police said the injured person was taken to the hospital for medical attention, but their condition was not listed. Police said they are investigating the incident as an aggravated assault.

 Police were called to the 1900 block of North State Street after a person sitting in a parked car was shot. Police reports said a black male subject, no other description given, walked up to the vehicle and shot inside the vehicle several times. Reports said a man inside was shot and drove himself to the hospital where he was treated for his wound and listed in stable condition.

The incident is under investigation by police as an aggravated assault.

An incident in the 1000 block of DeSoto Avenue saw a man shot by people standing in the area. Police reports said the victim parked his vehicle and got out, he was fired upon and returned fire. The victim told police he realized he was hit and drove himself to the hospital where he was treated and listed in stable condition.

The incident is under investigation as an aggravated assault.

Police are also investigating a shooting in the 900 block of Desoto Avenue where a male subject was inside of his vehicle in a parking lot when a someone began to shoot at him. Police reports said the vehicle was struck several time and the male subject was able to drive away from the scene without being shot. Police said no injuries were reported at that time and the incident is being investigated as an aggravated assault.

Aggravated assault is defined as injury or threat to a person to make them fear for their life or assault with a weapon. It is punishable by up to 20-years in prison and a $10,000 fine. An adult who assaults a juvenile can find the penalty enhanced to 30-years in prison.

Aggravated assault is a felony and shooting into a home can also be deemed a felony if prosecutors and judges wish to pursue it.
