Within the first 24 hours of a new campaign to stop drivers with illegal fake paper plates from skirting toll road charges and vehicle registration fees, police have made 24 citations for violations on the Hardy Toll Road.

Authorities with Harris County Precinct 1 said via Twitter that deputies on the toll road will continue tracking down fraudulent plates as part of the “Tag You’re It” campaign through the end of January. From Monday to Tuesday, the agency said it made 24 citations.

PAPER CHASE: Fake tags are flying out of Texas’ DMV system by the thousands. The state may finally fix it.

The initiative is a response from local and state authorities to an epidemic of millions of fraudulent temporary vehicle tags being recorded on Texas roads.

More deputies will be trained to identify fake plates on Thursday to help with enforcement, the Houston Chronicle reported. Harris County also recently approved a study be done to determine the financial loss fake tags pose.

Officials ultimately hope the initiative will help them trace the owners of fake tags to dealers who sell them, and then provide that information to Houston Police and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation.
