Registration Renewal

Michiganders can now extend their vehicle registration even longer – Midland Daily News

Michigan drivers can now register their vehicles for two years instead of an annual basis.

Signed into law last week by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, House Bill 4117 allows Michiganders to extend their registration for two years instead of the traditional one year when they renew on their birthdays.

“Making life easier for Michiganders is one of my top priorities,” Whitmer said in a statement last week. “The changes that I signed into law today will give Michigan car owners the opportunity to renew their license every two years instead of annually and will provide options for Michigan businesses to renew their special vehicle registration.”

This change is expected to save Michiganders on trips to the Secretary of State offices and provide a more convenient route to registration renewal.

“Our branch offices are open, pandemic operations are finished, and there is abundant availability for office visits across the state,” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said in a statement.

The option for extended registration joins other changes made by the Secretary of State, including a non-binary option on drivers’ licenses and extended Wednesday hours for all offices.

Also signed into law by Whitmer last week was Senate Bill 220, which allows for no-cost registration renewal for certain agricultural and industrial vehicles.
