Motor Vehicles Department books 42 vehicles with faulty number plates in 6 days in Ernakulam – Times of India

KOCHI: The enforcement wing of the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has booked 42 vehicles with defective numberplates or without any registration numbers over the past six days in Ernakulam.
MVD conducted the special drive after a reported rise in violations by vehicles plying on the city roads.
Of the 42 vehicles booked, most are bikes and cars. Most of the bikes were premium ones and the offenders are in the 23–24 age group.
While some vehicles plied without numberplates or used fancy ones some others were not displaying the numbers correctly or had registration numbers written in fonts that are smaller in size and difficult to read.
Though vehicles manufactured after April 2019 are stipulated to have high security registration plates affixed by the dealers themselves, some of the offenders have been found to have removed them.
“The offences related to numberplates are increasing and most of the vehicles caught are in Ernakulam city and Aluva areas. Some people remove the high security registration plates ,” said an MVD official.
“As per rules, driving vehicles without number plates will attract a fine of Rs 3,000. The vehicle owner should affix the numberplate and produce it before us,” he said.
“We are also booking the vehicles with registration plates on which the digits and the letters are written in a font that is difficult to read even from a distance of 5m from the vehicle,” said the officer.
