NEW CANAAN — Two vehicles parked in a driveway were damaged over the weekend as thieves attempted to steal one that was left unlocked, police said Monday.

Minutes before 8 a.m. Saturday, officers were sent to Douglas Road for a reported attempted car theft, Chief Leon Krolikowski said.

The vehicle, a Mazda CX5, was parked and left unlocked with the key fob inside in the driveway of a residence, the chief said. The suspects were unable to steal the vehicle, the chief said, because it was being blocked by other vehicles in the driveway.

In the attempted theft, Krolikowski said, the Mazda sustained front-end, rear-end and left-side damage, while another vehicle in the driveway was damaged on its left side.

Krolikowski reminded residents to always lock vehicles and not to leave keys, key fobs or valuables inside, especially in plain sight.
