NEW CANAAN — Police say they are investigating a weekend crime spree that included a stolen vehicle, larceny from vehicles and stolen mail, officials said.

Chief Leon Krolikowski said the first incident was reported Saturday morning when officers responded to an Orchard Drive home around 7:45 a.m. for a report of a stolen 2021 BMW X7. The vehicle had last been seen parked at the house around 8:30 p.m. Friday.

The owner told police the vehicle was locked and the keys were not inside it. The vehicle had a GPS tracking unit and was found in Waterbury, where local police recovered it.

Officers also responded to multiple reports of unlocked vehicles on Hickok, Bayberry and Greenley roads where items were taken. Krolikowski said among the stolen items were a woman’s jacket, a manual for one of the vehicles, a vehicle’s registration and an insurance card.

Just before 8 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a Pocconock Trail home to investigate a report that mailboxes had been rummaged through during the overnight hours.

Officers saw several mailboxes open with mail on the ground, the chief said. Officers canvassed the neighborhood and found multiple mailboxes on Carter Street were also open and a large amount of mail was on the ground. Some of the mail had a Cheese Spring Road address on them, Krolikowski said.

After these incidents, the police chief reminded residents to lock their vehicles and take keys with them and remove any valuables from vehicles.

To prevent mail theft, he said, residents should avoid leaving items in their mailbox for extended periods of time. Mail theft should be reported to police and the United States Postal Service, Krolikowski said.
